Welcome to the Gateway Reading Council’s website. It is our hopes that this site will provide resources and tools for building or enhancing your love for reading. Let us know how we can make this site better.
The Gateway Reading Council is a professional organization affiliated with the California Reading Association (CRA) and the International Literacy Association (ILA). We are composed of teachers, administrators, parents, librarians, professors, paraprofessionals, students, and community members interested in promoting literacy.

Our Mission
Our council is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of teaching reading and promoting literacy in our community. This year’s theme is: Share the Joy of Literacy!
Mission: The mission of the Gateway Reading Council is to serve as a local council for the California Reading Association and to serve as a professional educational network advocating literacy for children and adults in Sonoma County.
Goal 1: Professional Development:
To enhance literacy instruction by providing research-based opportunities for professional growth that meets the needs and interests of educators and students.
Goal 2: Partnerships with the Community Literacy Organizations, CRA and ILA:
To strengthen connections with community literacy groups, CRA and ILA to achieve our common goals.
Goal 3: Leadership Development:
To support, train and mentor local teachers and community literacy leaders so they can become active, dynamic literacy professionals.
Goal 4: Membership Diversity:
To increase the number of Gateway members as well as expand the diversity of our members to include members from all grade levels including the University, private schools and partner literacy organizations such as the Sonoma County Office of Education and the Sonoma County Library System.
Goal 5: Advocacy:
Provide advocacy for policies and practices that improves literacy instruction and serves the best interests of all learners and professionals.
Goal 6: Collaboration:
To establish and strengthen alliances with individuals and organizations that share goals and interests on significant literacy issues.
